FIRE RAIDS PART OF ASHANTI REGIONAL DIRECTORATE OF GHANA EDUCATION SERVICE

Fire swept through a section of the Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service and destroyed valuable documents and other essential equipment at the office of
the Regional Director in charge of Administration.

It took  the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to access the top floor offices of the to fight the fire that could have extended to other offices of the three storey building that housed several other offices.


Fire under control

Reports say two fire engines were deployed to the scene to fight the fire.

When Crimecheckgh.blogspot.com got to the scene at around 9a.m. the fire had been brought under control, with smoke bellowing from the top floor.

Fire officials told reporters that the service received a distress call around 7 a.m. Sunday about the fire outbreak and immediately moved its men to the scene.

Officials stated that access to the top floor initially posed a challenge to the fire fighters but they had to try very hard  to gain access to the floor to extinguish the raging fire.

“We had to use the turn-table ladder to break in to gain access to the office to be able to bring the fire under control,” an officer told our correspondent.

Affected offices

The spokesman for the Ashanti Regional Education Directorate, Mark Ofori confirmed that the office of the Regional Director,  Mary Owusu Achiaw and her secretary's office on the top floor were destroyed.

Mr Ofori could not establish the cause of the fire when asked but indicated that the Ghana National Fire Service and the Police have begun investigations to ascertain the cause.

Fire officers also advised institutions to observe fire safety measures such as switching off gadgets when not in use to avoid fire disasters.



Eye witness account

An eyewitness, who is also a security man around the area told our reporter that he was on the premises when he heard a loud sound from some of the offices.

“After the loud noise that sounded like a bomb, I saw thick smoke engulfing the whole place so I immediately placed a call to the fire service,” he stated.

The Ashanti Regional Education Directorate is located at Amakom, in Kumasi, a walking distance from the regional office of the West African Examination Council and the Kumasi Technical Institute, (KTI).
