Government Clears Subventions Of Free Shs


The government has paid GHc66.8 million as subvention for the second semester to public senior high and technical schools in the country. The amount covers the recurrent fees for the second semester.

Out of this amount, GHc32,790,607.00 has been earmarked for the 20% feeding fee for perishable food items, GHc3,561,190.00 as Teacher motivation whiles GHc890,458.00 is for the maintenance of furniture in schools.

The recurrent fees cover general stationery, first aid, maintenance of vehicles, building maintenance, sports fees, culture fees, sanitation fees, postage and practical fees.

Others include maintenance of machines/tools, examination fees, entertainment fees, SRC dues and co-curricula activities.

The rest are laboratory supplies, development levy, house dues and technical training materials (for TVET students only).

Items such as exercise books, note books, school uniforms and PE kits have already been provided to the schools at the school level. The school uniforms were procured by the heads but payments will be done centrally by the headquarters.

Notwithstanding these payments, National Food Buffer Stock Company limited continue to supply food items to the boarding schools while the ministry continue to provide one hot meal a day for day students.

In addition to the subventions, the government has also paid over GHc20 million for utilities under the Free SHS policy for all public  SHSs in the country.
GHc13,385,295.25 had been paid to then Electricity Company of Ghana now Power Distribution Services (PDS) and another GHc 7,738,970 also went to the Ghana Water Company Ltd to cover payment for utilities supplied for 2018

The Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh on various platforms, has emphasized the government’s unflinching commitment in ensuring that no qualified Ghanaian child is denied access to quality education as it remains the only sure way to better the fortunes of our youth in the future. By this, the government will continue to make available the needed resources and support to make this vision a reality.bb
