Corruption Perception Index Improves

Image
The Ghana chapter of transparency international has released Ghana’s score on the Global corruption perceptions index. Ghana’s score has improved, meaning the Government has done extremely well in deterring public sector corruption. This is the first improved score after three years of consistent decline.  This attests to the fact that the Akufo- Addo regime is up to task in the fight against corruption and the fruits are beginning to show.  Government views the marginal increase in the score as an indication of work in progress, and we can all agree that governance is a continuous process.  The improved performance is largely attributed to the following: introduction of the Paperless Port Operations, the Integrated E-lmmigration, E-Procurement, E-Passport, the establishment of the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the general liberalized media environment that have positively affected Ghana's outlook. The Government will guard against complacency, and expects Ghanaians to sup

2019: Onnoghen's Suspension Risks Affecting Perceptions On Elections Credibility - UK

Image
“The British High Commission expresses serious concern over the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria. “We have heard a wide range of credible and independent voices, including in the Nigerian legal profession and civil society, who have expressed concern over the constitutionality of the Executive branch’s suspension of the chief officer of the judiciary. “We respect Nigeria’s sovereign authority and its right to adjudicate on constitutional provisions but as friends of the Nigerian people, we are compelled to observe that the timing of this action, so close to national elections, gives cause for concern. “It risks affecting both domestic and international perceptions on the credibility of the forthcoming elections. “We, along with other members of the international community, are following developments closely. “We encourage all actors to maintain calm and address the concerns raised by this development through due process, demonstrating their commitment to respecting the cons

PDP To Tanko: Quit The Bench Now!...Says His Action On Election Tribunal Is A Nillity

Image
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) notes the illegal swearing in of members of the election petitions tribunal by Justice Mohammed Tanko and surmised that his action was a complete nullity. The PDP insists that in the face of our law, Justice Tanko cannot function as a Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), as there is no vacancy in that office since the 1999 Constitution (as amended) has no provision for two Chief Justices of Nigeria at any particular time.  Justice Walter Onnoghen is still in charge as the Chief Justice of Nigeria. The PDP therefore charges Justice Tanko to note that he is allowing himself to be used by despotic forces in their bid to truncate our hard-earned democracy. It is also imperative for Justice Tanko to agree that, having allowed himself to be used to desecrate the hallowed temple of justice, his oath of office and oath of allegiance, the only option left for him is to quit the bench. The PDP reminds Justice Tanko of his membership of the panel set up by the Nati

Address By President Buhari On The Suspension Of Honour Justice Walter Nkanu Samuel Onnoghen As Chief Justice Of Nigeria And Swearing In Of Acting Chief Justice

Image
Fellow Nigerians, A short while ago, I was served with an Order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal issued on Wednesday 23rd January 2019, directing the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Honourable Justice Walter Nkanu Samuel Onnoghen from office pending final determination of the cases against him at the Code of Conduct Tribunal and several other fora relating to his alleged breach of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers. 2.      The nation has been gripped by the tragic realities of no less a personality than the Chief Justice of Nigeria himself becoming the accused person in a corruption trial since details of the petition against him by a Civil Society Organization first became public about a fortnight ago. 3.      Although the allegations in the petition are grievous enough in themselves, the security agencies have since then traced other suspicious transactions running into millions of dollars to the CJN’s personal accounts, all  undeclared or improperly decl

Npp Hails Dagbon And Congratulates Abubakar Mahama Andani On His Investiture As New Yaa Naa

Image
The NPP gladly joins the rest of the world to commend the people of Dagbon particularly the Abudu and Andani Royal families for their respective commitments towards bringing to an end decades of unrest and division in Dabgon culminating in today’s historic coronation of a new Yaa Naa. The party equally congratulates the immediate past Yoo-Naa, Abubakari Mahama, on his coronation as the 42nd Overload of Dadgon. The Dagbon State is undoubtedly, one of the richest and most ancient traditional kingdoms in the nation’s history dating back to the 13th century. Dagbon had remained largely peaceful contributing significantly to the nation’s cultural heritage until it was plagued with decades of chieftaincy crisis occasioned mainly by intense disagreements between its two royal gates in relation to succession to the Yaa Naa kinship and associated customary practices. The crisis, regrettably, got to a crescendo in 2002 when the then King of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Yakubu Andani II, together with other

President Akuffo-Addo Reopens Obuasi Gold Mines In Fulfilment Of Campaign Pledge

Image
The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has re-opened the Anglogold Ashanti gold mine in Obuasi, which had been effectively closed since 2014, in fulfilment of a campaign pledge he made to the people of Obuasi on 15th July, 2016, in the run-up to the 2016 general elections. Addressing the Chiefs and people of Obuasi, on Tuesday, 22nd January, 2019, President Akufo-Addo noted that upon his assumption of office, a series of discussions and negotiations took place, the end-result being the re-development project of the Obuasi mine. “In order to help Anglogold Ashanti secure the needed investment for this project, Government had to provide a number of fiscal incentives, and guarantee the stability of the project against changes in the legal environment, especially in the early years of the mine’s operations,” he said. The President continued, “It is expected that all the agreements reached, including the vigorous implementation of domestic content policy, will be

Press Statement By APC Presidential Campaign Council On Atiku's Clandestine Visit To The U.S

Image
In our press release issued on Sunday, December 30, 2018, titled “WHEN THE THIEF IS SHOUTING THIEF”: THE CASE OF ALHAJI ATIKU ABUBAKAR”, we correctly predicted as follows: “By running for President of Nigeria, Atiku intends to get some immunity from prosecution. Already he is hoping to obtain a visa to visit the US, as a guest of the State department, a concession that the US will grant to a Presidential candidate of Africa’s biggest Nation”. Therefore, we were not surprised by his visit to the U.S. For us, this visit is really a non-event considering the issues involved in the forthcoming election. However, we have bad news for those who think this is a momentous event for Atiku Abubakar: the visit was nothing but a downright catastrophe because rather than dispel the fact of indictments hanging over his head, it further confirms and reinforces those facts for the following reasons: (1)        The visit had all the trappings of a fugitive sneaking into America under a “special diplo

Prof. Gyampo Applauds Pres.Akuffo-Addo's Boldness In Resolving Dagbon Conflict

Image
President Akufo Addo deserves some commendation. Under his  presidency and through his instrumentalities (including boldness and tactfulness), the road map towards peace in Dagon has fully been implemented and Dagon has selected a new Overlord. Well done, Mr President. This is a good LEGACY that cannot be glossed over by right thinking people in society. We cannot lose sight of the role of JA Kuffour in putting together the eminent chiefs headed by Otumfuor to resolve the conflict. Prof Mills and President Mahama also did what they could in creating some fertile ground for dialogue. But the intense commitment, audacious boldness, tampered with tactfulness exhibited by President Akufo Addo, both visibly and behind the scenes, for the purposes of ensuring peace in Dagbon, stands him out among his predecessors in dealing with the crisis in Dagbon. Mr President, this is a good legacy worth celebrating. A legacy that cannot be wiped away by any regime that succeeds you. A legacy that woul

"Ghanaians Are Going Through Very Had Times" - Jerry John Rawlings

Image
Former President Jerry John Rawlings says Ghanaians are going through very hard times. According to Mr. Rawlings, the situation is profound hence there is the need for all to extend a helping hand to those who are in need. “We all know how hard things are in Ghana right now,” he admits. “Times are really hard and during critical moments such as this funeral, the expenses family incurs is a not a joke. “Things are not going too well for a lot of people. So I am pleading with all of you, the way things are, we have no choice but to help one another.” Rawlings who had joined other personalities for the funeral of Nana Ama Obu Derby-Michaelis, mother of Vice President of the Ship Owners and Agents Association of Ghana (SOAAG), Adam Imoru Ayarna further indicated that things are tough not only for the ordinary Ghanaian but also the rich and famous as he is unable to offer a resounding support to the bereaved. “It’s not easy for me. I wish I could support,” he noted.
